Grandson: a terroir to your taste

The medieval town of Grandson and its castle dominate Upper Lake Neuchâtel. Surrounded by the Bonvillars vineyard, with its rich bounty of terroir products, this town is located on the cycling route in the Yverdon-les-Bains region (northern Lake Geneva Region).

Grandson, which is located in the Yverdon-les-Bains region, overhangs Lake Neuchâtel and is surrounded by the countryside and by vineyards. The big medieval old town and the castle illustrate its long and rich history.

Listed as a monument of national interest with its museums, oldies, crossbows and its collection of arms and armours, Grandson Castle, which used to be a seigniorial residence, was the headquarters during the Burgundy wars against Charles the Bold. The first building was built in the 13th century by Othon I upon his return from the Crusades.

The harmonious vineyard on the foot of the Jura produces Bonvillars AOC, an appellation of controlled origin. Wine has been cultivated there for more than a thousand years. Chasselas, Gamay, Garanoir, Pinot, Riesling Sylvaner are the major grape varieties that can be tasted. The Maison des Terroirs, in the heart of Grandson, proposes a great number of tastings accompanied by cheese, lake fish, ham and boutefas (typical local sausage).

This is a not-to-be-missed stopover during a day out cycling or hiking along the countless vineyard trails above the lake. Grandson is part of the marked cycling route in the northern area of the Lake Geneva Region, from Lausanne to La Chaux-de-Fonds.
